Ice & Snow Removal

Ice Dams and Snow Removal

Snow Removal
Winters in New England can be harsh, especially to our roofs. Sometimes it is simply the weight of the snow, though flat roofs are especially vulnerable to collapse. Fire & Flood can assist you. We will remove the snow from your home or business, but also assist in restoration after a roof collapse. Call us if you suspect you have a problem with snow or ice on your home.

Ice Dams

What exactly is an ice dam?

As snowfall builds up on the roof it becomes compressed by its own weight. All roofs lose some heat which escapes upwards and melts the snow on the underside of the snow pack. Ice is formed over time as the snow pack is warmed during the day then refrozen at night. This cycle continues throughout the winter months, and because the snow melt is trapped by the ice, an ice dam is formed. The runoff water is often forced under the shingles and then down through the walls and ceiling of the structure.

What kind of damage can an ice dam do?
The water from ice dams can get into the walls, ceilings and window frames of a structure. Water can ruin ceilings and drywall or plaster as well as flooring and carpeting. If the water is not removed from the building mold growth can begin. Additionally, the weight of the ice and snow can damage the building structure and in an extreme case can cause a total or partial collapse. The amount of damage is determined by how much water gets into the structure, as well as how soon we are able to get the ice/snow removed from the roof and get the structure dried out. The sooner you call your insurance company/agent or our office the more likely we are able to minimize the damage.

At Fire & Flood, we have the experience, compassion and know how to handle your ice dam and snow removal needs.
